Z'África Brasil, a Brazilian hip-hop group from São Paulo, was formed in 1995 by Gaspar and Fernando Beatbox. The duo was soon joined by Funk Buia, Pitcho, DJ Meio Kilo, and later DJ Tano. All members hail from the favelas of São Paulo, and their lyrics often reference forgotten historical aspects of Brazil. In 2001, they collaborated with Assassin. The group's debut album, Antigamente quilombos hoje periferia, was released in Brazil in 2002 and won the Prêmio Hutúz for best new artist of the year. In 2006, they released their second studio album, Tem cor age. Their EP, Verdade e traumatismo, was launched in France in 2007 under the label Livin'Astro.
