Michael Stephenson has established himself as a potent force in an eclectic array of musical genres, bringing to bear his skills as a multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter in a variety of impressive contexts. Whether he is performing on the Late Show with Vic Mensa, working with Ricky Martin, singing with Rihanna at a music award ceremony, performing as a founder and band leader with Hudson Horns, or joining Solange at a plush performance at the Guggehheim, Sonny works hard to seamlessly blend in to an ensemble or stand out in a solo act.
Born and raised in Philly, Stephenson was exposed in large doses to RnB, soul, rock, and jazz. He routinely performs as a lead singer, showcasing his own writing and that of other established acts. His singing is deeply influenced by the likes of Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson. He is a jazz-trained Saxophonist whose style hearkens back to a range of players and bands such as Dexter Gordon and Parliament-Funkadelic.
His upcoming LP (produced by ), Michael Stephenson Meets the Trio, is due out in late Summer. The album displays a sound and an appeal that are genre-defying and will pay homage to his diverse musical roots, which span jazz, R&B, soul, and more.
