Nathan Evans's meteoric rise to musical stardom happened seemingly overnight. When the burgeoning Scottish singer and former postman from Airdrie in North Lanarkshire began uploading singing-performance videos in March 2020, no one could have predicted that by January he'd have a major-label deal and a Number 1 single under his belt. After posting his first sea shanty on a video sharing platform in July, Evans kick-started a global craze for the centuries-old seafaring songs. His first video, "Leave her Johnny," was posted in July 2020 and stirred up a tidal wave of interest. It was followed by a video of Evans singing "The Scotsman" and then "The Wellerman," which is a cover of Bristol group The Longest Johns' version of "Wellerman," a 19th-century whaling song. Posted in December, the track became a viral hit, and in January 2021 Evans signed a three-album recording contract with Polydor Records. He released his official version of "Wellerman" on January 22, 2021, and it went straight in at Number 1 in the UK. A remix of the track by 220 KID and Billen Ted took the Number 3 spot.
