Nikolo Spassov Kotzev, a Bulgarian guitarist, composer, arranger and violinist, was born on June 6, 1961 in Pazardzhik. He began playing the violin at age five and later took up guitar while exploring rock music during his teenage years. In the late 1980s, Kotzev played with the Bulgarian rock group Impulse. He relocated to Mariehamn, Åland, Finland in 1989 and met Swedish singer Björn Lodin while touring Europe, which led to him joining Lodin's band Baltimore. After leaving Baltimore due to creative differences, Kotzev started the solo project Brazen Abbot in 1994. The first album under this moniker was Live and Learn (1995). Subsequent albums included Eye of the Storm (1996) and Bad Religion (1997).
