Liz Carroll, born September 19, 1956 in Chicago, Illinois, is an American fiddler and composer. Her parents were both Irish immigrants, and she grew up immersed in traditional Irish music. Carroll began her musical journey with classical lessons at Visitation Catholic School. Carroll's breakthrough came in 1973 when she won second place in the All-Ireland under 18 fiddle championship. The following year, she secured first place in the same category and in 1975, at age 18, she won the All-Ireland Senior Fiddle Championship. Her early recordings include Kiss Me Kate: Traditional Music of Ireland (1977) with Tommy Maguire and her solo debut A Friend Indeed (1977). She was a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts' National Heritage Fellowship in 1994. Notable performances include collaborations with Don Henley and appearances at the White House in 2009. Carroll has composed over 170 tunes, many of which have become modern standards.
