With a sleek alt-R&B sound and a studious devotion to her ‘90s influences, DMV-area singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ayoka emerged fully formed in 2020 with her debut singles “Elevate” and “Need to Know.” Her frank lyricism and relatability appear effortless across both tracks, but the clarity of self presented across her upcoming debut, Venus, is a journey years in the making.
From a young age, Ayoka had a passion for dissecting music. While her parents raised her on everything from Red Hot Chili Peppers to Tupac and Sade, her stepfather used to break down all the different elements that go into a jazz song. She soon developed a fascination with picking up instruments, understanding melodies, and breaking down song structures.
For Ayoka, her process of writing lyrics isn’t just about putting words on a page; it’s about creating experiences. While her latest single “2 AM” was born out of a freestyle, its unpacking of both the demure, subtle sexiness and the fierce prowess of seduction feel fully synthesized. While Venus is about the ups, downs and emotions we go through when trying to navigate the dating pool and deeper commitments to others, Ayoka also pays homage throughout to her spiritual journey through astrology, which has shaped her into the woman she is today.
