Ilya Grubert, born on May 13, 1954, in Riga, Lithuania, is a violinist. He began his musical education at the Emīls Dārziņš School of Music and later studied with Yuri Yankelevich, Zinaida Guilels, and Leonid Kogan at the Moscow Conservatory. Grubert's international breakthrough came when he won the Sibelius Competition in 1975. This was followed by victories at the Paganini Competition in Genoa in 1977 and the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1978. Throughout his career, Grubert has performed with notable orchestras such as the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, and the Rotterdam Philharmonic, collaborating with conductors including Mariss Jansons and Gennady Rozhdestvensky. His discography includes albums like Violin Concerto by Myaskovsky and Weinberg with the Russian Philharmonic (2003) and Ernst: Concerto Pathétique / Concertino (2006). Grubert has resided in the Netherlands and taught at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and the University of Minho.
