Drummer with U2, Larry Mullen Jr. was born on the Northside of Dublin in 1961, attending Mount Temple School where he met The Edge, Bono and Adam Clayton. In 1978 U2 was formed after Mullen posted a message on the school notice board looking for musicians. The band’s first album Boy was released in 1980.
Acknowledged as one of the best live acts in the world, U2 have toured the globe countless times, released 15 studio albums and won numerous awards, including 22 Grammys® and the Amnesty International Ambassador of Conscience Award. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005 and have twice been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
Alongside his work in U2, Mullen’s music career includes numerous solo writing, performing and recording projects. Highlights include working with Nanci Griffith, along with fellow U2 band member Adam Clayton, on Flyer (1994); Emmylou Harris on Wrecking Ball (1995); the re-recording of the theme to the 1996 film 'Mission: Impossible' with Adam Clayton which was nominated for a Grammy in 1997; Underworld on the track ‘Boy Boy Boy’ from Oblivion with Bells (2007); and Alice Cooper on Paranormal (2017). Larry and Adam also joined members of REM to form the group Automatic Baby, performing one time only, at MTV’s inaugural ball for Bill Clinton in 1993.
In 1990, Mullen co-wrote and arranged the iconic track 'Put 'Em Under Pressure’ - the official Ireland national team song for the FIFA World Cup.
Mullen co-wrote and performed on two new tracks for the documentary film ‘Left Behind’, which is set for a theatrical release in January 2025. The song ‘One of Us’ with Welsh singer Donna Lewis, and the film’s closing track ‘Between the Lines’, with American singer-songwriter Gayle (of ‘abcdefu’ fame).
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts selected Mullen, along with his U2 bandmates, to receive the 45th Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime artistic achievements at a ceremony in Washington D.C. in December 2022.
