Arie van Beek was born in 1951 in Rotterdam, Netherlands. He studied percussion and orchestra conducting at the Rotterdam Conservatory under Edo de Waart and David Porcelijn. Van Beek began his career as a percussionist before transitioning into conducting. In 1994, he became chief conductor of the Orchestre d'Auvergne in France, where he conducted approximately 60 concerts annually and toured extensively across Europe, North Africa, and Japan. He has also been a regular guest conductor with numerous orchestras internationally. Van Beek is particularly noted for his work with contemporary composers, conducting first performances of pieces by Karol Beffa, Guillaume Connesson, Kaija Saariaho, and others. His contributions to music have been recognized with several awards, including the Elly Ameling Prize in 2003 and the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in 2007.
