Jean Fournet, born April 14, 1913 in Rouen, France, was a conductor known for his work in French symphonic music. He studied at the Paris Conservatory and made his debut as a conductor in Rouen in 1936. From 1944 to 1957, he served as the artistic director of the Opéra-Comique National Theatre in Paris. In the 1950s, Fournet's recordings of Fauré's Requiem and Les Pêcheurs de perles by Bizet, enhanced his reputation. He also became director of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in 1961 and made his U.S. debut in 1965 at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Notable recordings include Thomas: Mignon (1964) and Saint-Saëns: Samson et Dalila (2000). Fournet was awarded the Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters in 2003. He passed away on November 3, 2008, in Hilversum, Netherlands.
