Armen Nalbandian is an independent composer and pianist whose practice focuses on the physics of improvisation through spontaneous composition in performance.
Throughout his career, Armen has explored the potential of improvisation through permutations between concepts and collaborations. He advocates improvising without formulaic mechanisms, and has created ensembles and settings purely focused on unique aesthetic, philosophical and poetic concepts.
Beginning with classical music and jazz ensembles, his career has evolved in seeking to expand the possibilities of sound and performance through spontaneous group composition, prepared piano and Fender Rhodes, and electronically layered improvisations. With a recording catalog of 23 albums over 17 years, Armen embodies Andrei Tarkovsky‘s proposal of ‘sculpting in time,’ by ensuring all of his recorded output, whether spontaneously or pre-composed, is expressed in one and only take.
Armen is the descendant of Armenian writer and activist Mikayel Nalbandian (1829–1866).
