Norbert Balatsch was an Austrian conductor, who was especially known as a choral conductor and began his career as a baritone choir singer. He was a member of the Wiener Sängerknaben boys’ choir from 1938 to 1944 and joined the Vienna State Opera chorus in 1952 as a baritone. In 1953, he became conductor of the Wiener Männergesang-Verein, a Vienna men’s chorus. At the Vienna State Opera, he progressed to Extrachor leader in 1965, vice choral conductor in 1967, and Chordirektor from 1968 to 1983. He also directed the New Philharmonia Chorus from 1975 to 1980. From 1972 to 1999, he served as chorus director of the Bayreuth Festival, working with conductors including Karl Böhm, Pierre Boulez, Carlos Kleiber, Georg Solti, and others. He later became conductor of the Coro dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in 1983 and briefly directed the Wiener Sängerknaben from 1999 to 2001. His recordings won two Grammy Awards for Best Choral Performance: Mozart’s Requiem in 1981 and Bach’s St Matthew Passion in 2001. Balatsch died on May 6, 2020, in Vienna at the age of 92.
