Biography

Zhu is a Chinese-American house DJ, electronic producer, and chart-topping dance artist. Born as Steven Zhu on April 28, 1989, he was raised by Chinese parents in the San Francisco Bay Area. Zhu studied music in school and began releasing his earliest tracks online, going viral with his medley of Outkast songs, "Moves Like Ms. Jackson," in February 2014. The Nightday, his debut EP, was released two months later, charting at Number 6 in Australia and Number 11 on Billboard's Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart. "Faded," the record's biggest single, was a global hit, cracking the Top 20 in eight countries and topping the dance charts in Poland, the UK, and the US, where it was also nominated for a Grammy Award. A second EP, Genesis Series, followed in 2015, with "Automatic" and "Working For It" extending his streak of Top 20 singles in America. Zhu then made his full-length debut with 2016's Generationwhy, which was co-produced by Skrillex and climbed to the top of the US dance chart. The EPs Stardustexhalemarrakechdreams and Ringos Desert Pt. 1 followed in 2017 and 2018, respectively, with the full-length Ringos Desert appearing in late 2018. Zhu released a string of non-album singles in 2019, landing another hit single with the PartywithRay collaboration "Came for the Low" before shifting his attention to a new album, Dreamland 2021, which appeared in April 2021.
