King Harvest is best known for "Dancing In The Moonlight," an early-1970s single that reached the Top 10 in both America and Canada. The band was formed in Ithaca, New York, in 1969, while co-founders Dave "Doc" Robinson, Ron Altbach, Ed Tuleja, and Rod Novak were attending Cornell University. After two years of playing cover songs at local bars and fraternity parties, the group broke up in 1971, only to reform that same year after all four members relocated to Paris. I Can Tell, the band's debut album, received a European-only release that year, although singles like "Roosevelt and Ira Lee" and "Musique Du Film 'Le Feu Sacré'" failed to chart. King Harvest then released a version of Boffalongo's "Dancing In The Moonlight" in 1972, reaching number 5 on Canada RPM Top Singles chart and number 10 on the US Cash Box Top 100. Another single, "A Little Bit Like Magic," became a modest hit in 1973, reaching number 87 on the Cash Box Top 100. Both songs appeared on the band's 1973 album Dancing In The Moonlight, which charted at number 50 on the Hot R&B LPs chart. The group split up in 1975, one year after releasing a self-titled follow-up album. Tuleja and Novak both appeared on Dennis Wilson's Pacific Ocean Blue in 1977, and other band members pursued various projects before reuniting decades later in 2012. This revamped version of the band released an EP, Caribbean, in 2013, followed by the full-length album Old Friends in 2015. Although King Harvest broke up for a third time in 2016, "Dancing In The Moonlight" continued to enjoy popularity across the world, appearing on the Deezer charts in multiple countries throughout 2023 before reaching number 78 on America's Top 100 iTunes Download chart in 2024.
