Joy Makita uses his craft to spread joy. His music blends traditional and contemporary sounds - Afrobeats, amapiano, R&B, dancehall, hip-hop, jazz, synthé rock - with lyrics in pidgin English and French.
From an early age, he grew up listening to Michael Jackson, Mylène Farmer, R. Kelly, Boyz II Men or Fat Joe.
Growing up, he became passionate about artists like Lil Wayne, DJ Khaled, Young Jeezy, Young Money, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Bryson Tyler, 6lack, Booba, Kalash or Josman.
At the age of 14, Joy moved to Accra, Ghana where he started his new artistic chapter.
He developed a deeper musical connection to his roots, exploring highlife and afrobeats thanks to artists like Wizkid, Asake, Rema, Sarkodie, Angélique Kidjo and Burna Boy.
Now based in France, Joy Makita represents “The Best of Both World”.
Gabon, Ghana - the African continent - and France, where he has been developing his craft since 2016.
His name, Makita, comes from the Barumbu clan, paying homage to the warrior Nyonda Makita, who fought against French colonial occupation in Gabon. Joy stands for the acronym "Just Only You" a mantra reminding him of the importance of being his own pillar.
