Music has always fascinated me. The first birthday present I remember was a cassette tape of modern instrumental music curated by my father, along with a stereo player. I learned and played the piano briefly as a teenager, but had to largely abandon it when I went into medical school and moved to the US. I retook piano playing after my graduation, but I didn’t really have a chance to focus on composition. Although I always wanted to compose music, only recently was I able to spend the time and effort required to learn harmony. To me, this was an eye opener. It was like learning a new language that allows universal expressions, understandable to all humans, heart to heart. I now see music as a diary, which I use to express emotions and to balance the stress of my work as a cardiologist. I hope to continue to explore composition for years to come. I am also interested in the evolutionary basis of music. Music is partially cultural, but it’s in our nature. It’s inside all of us. We seem to have evolved through non-random selection to sense it and to connect it instantly with our deepest emotions. Why? I’m not sure, but I am grateful for it. What I do know is that music brings us together. Thank you for listening.
