Few 1960s British pop stars achieved lasting fame and respect, but Dusty Springfield broke the mould. Blessed with such a naturally soulful voice many people assumed she was black, her trademark blonde beehive hair style and heavy mascara became an iconic emblem of a true great. First tasting fame in pop-folk group The Springfields, she launched her solo career with I Only Want To Be With You in 1963. Her biggest hit, however, was the booming ballad You Don't Have To Say You Love Me, a 1966 Number 1 in the UK and Number 4 in the US, leading to her own TV show. Always soulful, she signed to Atlantic Records to record her most famous album Dusty In Memphis, including the classic Son Of A Preacher Man. Hampered by stage fright, her career foundered but she was back in the charts with the Pet Shop Boys (What Have I Done To Deserve This, 1987) and Nothing Has Been Proved (1989). She died of cancer in 1999.
