The Whitlams, an Australian indie rock band, were formed in late 1992. The original lineup consisted of Tim Freedman on keyboards and lead vocals, Andy Lewis on double bass, and Stevie Plunder on guitar and lead vocals. The band's name was inspired by former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam. Their debut album, Introducing the Whitlams, was released in August 1993 and featured a mix of original and cover songs, including "Woody" and "Gough". In February 1995, their second album, Undeniably the Whitlams, was released. The band's breakthrough came with the release of Eternal Nightcap in September 1997, which reached Number 14 on the ARIA Albums Chart. This period also saw significant line-up changes following the death of Stevie Plunder in January 1996 and Andy Lewis in February 2000. The Whitlams achieved their highest chart success with Love This City (November 1999, Number 3) and "No Aphrodisiac" which was listed at number one on the Triple J Hottest 100, 1997. Their album Torch the Moon reached Number One in July 2002. The band's longest-lasting lineup included Warwick Hornby on bass guitar, Jak Housden on guitar, and Terepai Richmond on drums from 2001 to 2022.
