Some songs are poems set to music, where the music is just one possible interpretation of those lyrics, thus music is an interpretation and lyrics are reaching for meaning, or more precisely the words themselves are metaphors, images, conceptual and phonetic constructions that seek to convey meaning. An important distinguishing factor separating lyrics and music is that music can only seek to arouse that which is already known or experienced - music compels moods and emotional reactions, which are built on experiences from a person's past or present. Thus, music by itself can only draw on a person's past and present so will never take a person further than that person already has gone and experienced. But lyrics can impart something new. Some say a poet is anyone who tries to write a poem, but etymologically the word means a maker, a creator, ie one who discovers and imparts something entirely new. NADRIP is trying to be that older type of poet, even if only for those who are themselves that older type of poet. If you took the time to listen, thank you.
