Thomanerchor Leipzig is a German boys' choir founded in 1212 in Leipzig by the Margrave of Meißen. Associated with the St. Thomas Monastery, the city of Leipzig assumed management of the ensemble in 1539 following the Protestant Reformation. The choir is identified with Johann Sebastian Bach, who served as its cantor from 1723 until his death in 1750. During the Nazi era, cantors Karl Straube and Günther Ramin maintained a focus on religious repertoire to distance the group from political ideology. The ensemble released recordings of Bach cantatas under Hans-Joachim Rotzsch during the 1970s. Georg Christoph Biller succeeded Rotzsch as the cantor in 1992. The choir's discography includes Weihnachts-Singen des Thomanerchores zu Leipzig (1955), Thomaner Chor Leipzig (1963), and Weihnachtsoratorium BWV 248 (2011).
