Despite their brief existence, the 1960s British band The Attack has left behind some memorable tracks and spawned multiple compilations. Formed in London in 1966, it included guitarist and trumpeter David O'List (later The Nice), singer Richard Shirman, organist Bob Hodges, bassist Gerry Henderson and drummer Alan Whitehead, replaced by Brian Davison after joining Marmalade. Situated between the mod/freakbeat movement and emerging psychedelia, the Decca-signed band recorded four singles, starting with 1967's "Try It" and the original version of "Hi-Ho Silver Lining", charted at No. 43 and made much more famous by Jeff Beck's interpretation. Separated after the releases of "Created by Clive " (1967) and "Neville Thumbcatch" (1968), The Attack gave birth to the career of David O'List, who moved on to The Nice with Davison, then The Misunderstood and Roxy Music. In addition to the A and B sides of the singles, the band produced other tracks that remained unreleased for a long time, before appearing on the compilations Complete Recordings from 1967-1968 (1999), Final Daze (2001), About Time! (2006) and Strange House (2023).
