Born in Trento (Italy) and from a family of musicians, Matteo Franceschini began studying composition with his father and then obtained his diploma at the Milan Conservatory with Alessandro Solbiati. He perfected his skills at the Santa Cecilia Academy in Rome with Azio Corghi, then in France at Ircam, where he studied composition and computer music (2006-2008).
He has won numerous prizes in international competitions and has been commissioned by the Scala Philharmonic Orchestra, the Ensemble Intercontemporain, the Wigmore Hall, the Venice Biennale, the Mito Festival, the Ircam-Centre Pompidou, the Philharmonie de Paris, the Grand Théâtre de Provence, the Orchestre national d'Île-de-France, the Orchestre National de Belgique, the Opéra de Reims, the Opéra de Saint-Etienne, the Philharmonic Academy of Rome, and several other festivals.
He has created concerts, operas, symphonic, choral and chamber music works, soundtracks and multimedia tools.
Silver Lion for Music at The Venice Biennale 2019, Laureate of the Banque Populaire Foundation in 2018, "Fedora - Rolf Liebermann Prize for Opera 2014", he has been appointed composer in residence at the Arcal de Paris, the Orchestre National d'Île-de-France, the Philharmonic Academy of Rome and The Haydn Foundation. In 2011, he was awarded the title of "Italian Affiliated Fellow in the Arts" (Musical Composition) by the American Academy of Rome.
In 2017, Franceschini adopted TOVEL as his stage name. As TOVEL, he wishes to deepen the figure of the author/performer with the aim of experimenting a new sound "from within"; composition mirrored with instrumental practice opens new perspectives on the theatrical awareness of the sound gesture. The direct involvement on stage and the work in close contact with other musicians are presented as a true act of creation: transforming the score into sound energy.
Since 2011, his scores are published by Casa Ricordi - Universal Music Publishing.
