Formed in Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1972, Petra is one of the most influential bands in Christian rock history, redefining what faith‑based music could sound like at a time when the genre barely existed. The band fused bold theology with the power and polish of mainstream rock, helping usher Christian music out of church basements and onto concert stages around the world. While older Christians were initially suspicious of Petra’s sound, the group offered a more positive diversion from secular rock bands that were popular at the time. Over the course of the band’s 50+ year career, only guitarist Bob Harman remains from Petra’s founding line-up. However, many musicians that played with the group over the years - including Rob Frazier and Greg X. Volz – later had successful solo careers. Petra released their self-titled debut album in 1974, which was followed by Come and Join Us (1977), and Washes Whiter Than (1979). Over the decades, Petra continually evolved—embracing classic rock, arena anthems, and hard‑edged guitar riffs—while remaining anchored in Scripture and spiritual conviction. Known for their tight musicianship, layered harmonies, and unmistakable guitar work, Petra earned widespread respect both within Christian circles and beyond them. Their work in the 1980s was incredibly popular and included the albums Never Say Die (1981), More Power to Ya (1982), Not of this World (1983), Beat the System (1984), Captured In Time and Space (1986), and This Means War (1987). With numerous awards, chart‑topping albums, and millions of records sold worldwide, Petra’s legacy extends far beyond their discography. They paved the way for generations of Christian rock and metal artists, demonstrating that faith‑driven music could compete artistically and commercially while staying true to its calling. In 2025, Petra released the album Hope, their first studio album in over 20 years.
