Siegfried Köhler was a German conductor and composer born on July 30, 1923, in Freiburg im Breisgau. He studied harp at the Musikhochschule Freiburg and began his professional career in 1941 as a harpist and repetiteur at Theater Heilbronn. Following military service as a radio operator, he began conducting in Freiburg in 1946. Köhler served as the Generalmusikdirektor of the Cologne Opera, where he conducted the 1958 premiere of the ballet Das Vokaltuch der Kammersängerin Rosa Silber. He later held the same position in Saarbrücken from 1964 to 1974 and at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden between 1974 and 1988. From 1989 to 1994, he was the chief conductor at the Royal Swedish Opera and received the title of “Hovkapellmästare” from the King of Sweden. His compositions included the operetta Alles Capriolen and his autobiography of the same name. In 1978, he received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Köhler died on September 12, 2017, in Wiesbaden.
