Ambient music focused on sleep, mindfulness, and rest.
Dr. Keith Sigel and drummer / composer Mason Ingram have been friends and bandmates for over a decade, clocking gigs at every indie dive-bar throughout NYC and Brooklyn. After having children (and experiencing the subsequent loss of sleep), Keith turned some of his research attention to the effects of music on quality of sleep. Sifting through massive amounts of data, he found that most humans feel most peaceful when in an environment that emulates the womb: warm, dark, with a deep connection to mother earth.
Mason’s curiosity was piqued as Keith shared with him his findings and eventually, their conversation organically resulted in the birth of slowave, a musical experiment that set out to explore what it might look like to create this peaceful environment sonically.
The project’s aim? Recreate the ideal conditions for quietude and calm: a sonic landscape comprised of the natural, enveloping sounds of the mother (her heartbeat, her breath...the slow churning of a body at rest). slowave continues to research and expound upon this centuries-old, sacred connection, digging into nature’s patterns of refuge, growth, and regeneration.
By using research to guide them toward stones unturned, slowave began to shape this data into sound. Unsurprisingly, every bit of information absorbed has unequivocally pulsed with natural, inherent rhythms. Circadian rhythms dictate the cycles of waking and sleeping--a woman’s resting heart rate dictates a specific tempo--combine these liturgies with the gentle flow of ocean waves and the swirling of ambient noises beneath melodies as soft as lullabies. This is the sound of slowave.
