Biography

Post-punk band Fontaines D.C. were formed in Dublin, Ireland in 2017 by five students from the city's British and Irish Modern Music Institute. Lead singer Grian Chatten, guitarists Carlos O’ Connell and Conor Curley, bassist Conor Deegan III, and drummer Tom Coll were drawn together by a love of poetry. The group’s appreciation of the written word has been noticed by music critics, many of whom have commented on the lyrical depth of their songs and how it sits against their aggressive post-punk sound. The band released their debut single “Liberty Belle” in 2017, and the track’s popularity led to an invitation to perform a studio session for Seattle's KEXP, bringing them their first taste of American notoriety. They released their critically acclaimed 2019 debut album Dogrel, supporting it with a tour of the US and Europe. The album was a success and reached Number 4 in the Irish Album Charts and peaked at Number 9 in the UK, and it won multiple UK awards for Album of the Year. In May 2020, they released “A Hero’s Death”, the lead single and title track for the album of the same name that was released two months later. The album reached Number 1 in Scotland and hit the Number 2 position in Ireland and the UK. Fontaines D.C. released their third album, Skinty Fia, in April 2022, and the album shot to Number 1 In Ireland, Scotland, and the UK. It was also a Top 10 hit in Belgium, France, Germany, and the Netherlands.
