Born in Kingston in 1951, Lindel Beresford English, aka Junior English, is a Jamaican reggae singer who had a prolific career and scored a couple of hits during his heyday in the 1970s. English began performing in the 60s while he was still a teenager and recorded the singles “Fay Is Gone” and “My Queen” with the help of producer Prince Buster. Later on, he moved to London to finish his education, where he joined reggae groups The Magnets and The Nighthawks before embarking on a solo career in 1969. After landing a string of minor hits in the UK charts in the early 70s, English had to serve a six-month prison sentence for driving under the influence of alcohol. Most of the material featured in The Dynamic Junior English (1974), his studio debut, was written during his stint in jail. Sophomore effort The Great Junior English saw the light in 1976 and was followed by Crashed!, Naturally High, Jack the Ripper, and Win Some Lose Some, all released in 1978. That same year, he also had Number 1 hit in the UK with the single “In Loving You.” Even though his output waned during the 80s and 90s, English continued to perform and record well into the 21st century with the albums “Come with Me” (2008) and “U Make Me Happy” in 2010.
