Music Within is the artist project of Canadian composer Rob McAllister. Under the moniker, the Toronto-based multi-instrumentalist creates lush ambient and ambient-cinematic music. His work has been described as: “a deep refuge from the chaos of modernity.”
Nov 9, 2023 marked the release of McAllister’s album, Shifting Sands. It features a collection of introspective piano and synth pieces. Inspired conceptually by a lifelong fascination with outer space, and sonically by composers like Max Richter, Ólafur Arnalds, Goldmund, and Nils Frahm, the music strikes a refreshing balance between the acoustic and the electronic, the minimal and the richly layered. The artist’s felted acoustic piano plays a central role to the album’s sound: it’s intimate and personal, while vast and universal.
Of his music, McAllister says: “I hope it encourages people to look inwards and take some time away from the relentless pace of the world around us.”
A continuous output of music has garnered McAllister the attention of discerning critics. Ian Urbina of the New York Times has commended him saying: “His ambient-cinematic tracks are truly spectacular.” His music has been widely used in film, tv, and advertising, for clients such as Lexus, Holt Renfrew, IKEA, and Disney. He also scores music for film, most recently co-scoring the documentary film Town of Widows.
