Biography

Bursting out of Seattle's 1990s alternative rock scene, Pearl Jam harnessed the anger and disenchantment of the era to become one of the biggest rock bands in the world. Formed when former Mother Love Bone bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard recruited lead guitarist Mike McCready and Californian surfer Eddie Vedder, the band were quick to follow rivals Nirvana into the mainstream with debut album 'Ten' (1991) which reached number two on the Billboard 200 and has since sold over ten million copies in the US. 'Ten' singles 'Alive', 'Even Flow' and 'Black' stand as classic Pearl Jam anthems and are regular fixtures at the band's acclaimed live shows as they continue to tour the globe.

Despite boycotting Ticketmaster and refusing to make music videos, the band's popularity has endured decades after their initial success, with their unique brand of melodic hard rock and Vedder's bleak, social and political lyrics producing the chart-topping albums 'Vs' (1993), 'Vitalogy' (1994), 'No Code' (1996) 'Yield' (1998), 'Binaural' (2000), 'Backspacer' (2006) and 'Lightning Bolt' (2013). They marked their 20th anniversary with the documentary 'Pearl Jam Twenty' (2011), directed by Cameron Crowe, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017.

The band released their much-delayed eleventh studio album, 'Gigaton', in March 2020 and expect to tour Europe and North America in support of the record in 2021.
