Spawned from the Winston-Salem. N.C., jangle-pop circuit, Thrift Bakery often chooses the harder route of rock, funk and experimental indie rock. But they have been known to fall for a hook, chorus and guitar-based melody in recent years. The virtual band is now scattered across the USA and has been known to take a long hiatus. Freshness Test was released in 1988 and Mediocre Criminals 29 years later. Transcendent, their most tuneful long-player, came out in 2020. Hard & Sweet was released in September 2021.
The group continues to dot the map, steering from upbeat, guitar-driven, familiar sounds to experimental dream-pop.
Terrie Cloth plays bass, harmonica and other stringed instruments, Dlux vocalizes and Bob Hair runs the machines. The three of them sing while Tater Totts was added in 2012 on guitar.
The Beatport platform has carried Thrift Bakery songs in European dance music compilations.
