As a singer, guitarist and composer, Claudia has a long musical career in genres such as Colombian and Latin America folklore, jazz, and also in her own compositions. She lived in San Francisco, California, for fifteen years (1983-1998) and actively participated in the musical scene of the Bay Area. Through her encounter with the best jazz, Brazilian and Latin-American musicians, Claudia enhanced and developed her own concept of Colombian traditional music and started composing and arranging folklore with jazz elements.
In San Francisco, she recorded three albums: Claudia Canta Brasil (1989) where she explores Brazilian music and also includes her first two compositions (Cumbianeo and Este Amor). In Salamandra (1992) she gets closer to her Latin roots, and in Tierradentro (1996) she presents seven of her own compositions.
Vivir Cantando (2000)
In 1998 she decided to look for the poetry of her Spanish ancestors and established herself in Spain, participating actively in the musical scene of Spanish and Latin American musicians of Madrid. There she produces her fourth album Vivir Cantando (2000) that gathers a group of young Latin-American composers and Spanish musicians, interpreting their songs as well as presenting some of her new compositions.
Majagua (2004)
Claudia goes back to Colombia in 2002 and, with a clear vision and concept of what she has desired to accomplish with the traditional music of her country, she records Majagua (2004), an album that gathers an exuberant repertoire from all corners of Colombia, from the Atlantic and Pacific coasts to the plains and the Andean mountains. As with all of her albums, here Claudia also presents some of her own compositions based on Colombian folklore.
Arropame Que Tengo Frio (2009)
Arropame que tengo frío (‘Wrap me up, I’m cold’) was released in Colombia in December 2009. This CD size-book of 100 hundred pages comes with a CD containing 16 romances, vocally interpreted in a contemporary language without forgetting the traditional sonorities of this Atrato river region. Arropame que tengo frio is a creative and research work made in conjunction with ethnomusicologist Alejandro Tobón. Arropame que tengo frio presents a fair balance between poetry and music, achieving a panoramic view of the music culture of the medio Atrato river, where the old Romance takes up new and contemporary forms in the voices of Claudia, Pavel Urkiza, Alejandro Tobon, Guillermo Lozano, Wismar Mena.
Tal Cual (2010)
Claudia’s seventh album is a solo voice and guitar work, dedicated solely to her own compositions. An intimate and acoustic dialogue between her guitar and her voice, Tal Cual is a ‘live recording’ album, one that shows Claudia’s musical and poetic roots in a sincere and spontaneous way. Her most recent album De Amores Profundos (2015), was awarded with a recognition by the Secretary of Culture and Patrimony of Antioquia in 2014, and also received a
recognition from Colombian Ministry of Colombian Culture as one of the 3 best recording projects in Colombia in 2015. This album unites the most recent compositions and musical arrangements by Claudia during the years 2010-2015 specifically in the Andean music genre of Colombia. In it, Claudia offers a new vision in melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic elements, opening the horizons for new generations to come. Accompanied by some of the best musicians from Medellin and Bogotá, De Amores Profundos is ¨a work that respects the tradition, done with a research discipline and with a full creative freedom, in an open dialogue between folk roots and vanguardism.
Among her musical activities Claudia also stands out as a music composer for two documentaries on women victims of war, peace activists, women politicians and women warriors inserted in society. These documentaries are Mujeres No Contadas (2005) and Desde Diversas Orillas (2008). Songs that come out fo these documentaries are “Entre sueños y guerras”, “La voz del testigo” y “Compasión”. Claudia continues travelling, taking her mature and contemporary vision of Colombian music out to the world.
