When Irish rappers and producers Denise Chaila, MuRli, and God Knows, are impressive but together as Narolane they feel invincible. The rap collective and record label has been together since 2018 after coming together through a bible class in church in God Knows hometown Shannon. The bond was instant and their passion for music was mutual. They have all released music as solo artists on the label but the arrival of their first joint project, new EP Walk, marks a new chapter in Narolane’s story.
Raised on musicians such as Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, Fela Kuti, and Brenda Fassie, Narolane’s members understand that the music and political change make great friends. Their vision is one of integrity and mentorship, guidance and support. “Music is a vehicle for liberation,” as Denise says. They called their EP Walk because “we’re journeying.” Theirs is a necessary road trip, one that acknowledges that you can’t live in transition forever. At some point, you’re going to have to get up and walk.
They look to peers such as J. Cole and his Dreamville label, or TDE, home to Kendrick Lamar and SZA, as the blueprint for how a collective can meet people on their level. They are keen to add to their ranks with God Knows explaining, “Narolane is about giving people another option. We’re building a community based around the concept of joy.”
Narolane provoke distinct reactions because they dare express themselves; proudly and unapologetic in their messaging. As Denise says: “We’re born in a particular place, our family is Black and so are we. We call ourselves Irish because we are, we are also individuals. It needs to be complicated.”
The music Narolane create, a joyous and uplifting hip-hop blend underpinned by strong lyricism and undying energy finds Denise, MuRli, and God Knows coming together to celebrate life and showcase their excellence, offering up moments of introspection alongside outward displays of love and joy. Walk acts as a flare in the night sky; a bright and burning message to all around that there is something special happening.
