Los Wawancó, an Argentine tropical music group formed in La Plata in 1955, emerged from a multicultural ensemble of musicians from Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Colombia, and Argentina, led by founding member Mario Castellón and later including José Oscar “Taco” Morales. The band helped popularize cumbia in Argentina with recordings throughout the 1960s and blended Colombian cumbia with other tropical rhythms. Chronologically, the band released Cumbias! (1963), Cumbilandia (1967) and Wawancó (1968) in its early catalog, followed by compilations and remix collections including Wawa-Mix (1997), Wawa-Mix 2 (1998), 50 Años de Fiesta and 50 Temas – Feliz Cumpleaños in 2006, each reaffirming their legacy of festive rhythms. Notable tracks such as “El conductor” and “La pollera colorá” became staples on radio playlists. The group continued recording and releasing compilations through the 2000s, with their catalog spanning decades and multiple labels including EMI-Odeón and others. Their influence on cumbia and tropical music is widely referenced across Latin America, with later compilations celebrating their longstanding career.
