'Meet The Sun' out Jan 25th!
Formed in 2019, Shugorei is a profoundly adventurous expedition through the realms of live percussion and electronics, performed by Nozomi Omote and Thomas Green.
The sonic collision of diverse influences, broadly IDM and classical music, results in a unique and distinctly vivacious experience. Vibraphone, digital samples, analogue synthesizer, drums, jumbles and bricolage come together in painstakingly composed works as well as free-form improvised pieces.
Shugorei (meaning Guardian Spirit) explores an interplay between Noz's Japanese background and Western musicianship with Tom's far-reaching madcappery adding an element of excitement and surprise.
The duo release their music via Meanjin boutique label 4000 Records. Their debut, self-titled album was released on March 4th, 2021, followed by the stand-alone single 'Meet The Sun' featuring vocalist Shêm Allen in 2023.
In 2024 Shugorei collaborated with The Australian School of Kung Fu and Tai Chi, to draw out latent musical rhythms in Chinese Kung fu forms. The music was performed live by Black Square String Quartet, electronics and percussion. A studio-recorded soundtrack of the performance is presented as the album, The Sounds of Chow Gar.
The duo closed out 2024 with the futuristic hyperpop single ‘Roboto’, followed by ‘Three Pathways’ - a thrilling collaboration with Mindy Meng Wang, in early 2025.
