Ancient, a Norwegian black metal band from Bergen, was formed in 1992 by guitarist Aphazel. The following year, Grimm joined as drummer and vocalist, and they released the demo Eerily Howling Winds in 1993 and the EP Det Glemte Riket in 1994. After signing with Listenable Records, Ancient released their debut album, Svartalvheim, in 1994. In 1996, the band signed with Metal Blade Records and released The Cainian Chronicle, marking a shift towards a more atmospheric black metal sound. Notable lineup changes included the addition of Kimberly Goss as a female vocalist and keyboardist, and Lord Kaiaphas as vocalist and drummer. Ancient's subsequent albums include Mad Grandiose Bloodfiends (1997) and The Halls Of Eternity (1999). The band toured extensively, including performances at Wacken Open Air in 2000. They also released the album, Proxima Centauri, in 2001. After a hiatus, Ancient reformed for live shows in 2009 and released the album Back to the Land of the Dead in 2016.
