New Zealand born R&B singer Darnell Wilson began his music career in December of 2015 by releasing the first instalment of his ‘Cover/Remix’ series on SoundCloud and YouTube. With this performance being his first known release under his previous alias ‘Darnell’ he gained notoriety online tallying up over 200k+ views as an unknown artist before releasing his debut single ‘All Night Long’, featuring New Zealand boy band Titanium’s ‘Shaquille’, in early 2016 across all major digital platforms.
In July of 2016 DW gained overseas momentum as his feature assisted song ‘Summer Love’ with German producer DJ T.M. and American artist Young Sixx peaked at #3 on the German Billboard Charts for 3 straight weeks. This set DW off on a course of constant collaborations with German producer M.Dot also known as ‘DeeJay Maze’ and fresh off the success of his debut single and his feature assisted international collaboration, DW toured along side New Zealand artist Dominick on their nationwide U18 Tour known as ’Pro Fresh’ in late 2016.
In May of 2017 DW released the second instalment of his ‘Cover/Remix’ series with an acoustic rendition of ‘Forever’, by Chris Brown, with longtime collaborator ‘Takz’ and after making it onto Aotearoa’s Most Talented it tally’d up over 100k+ online in the first week gaining him nationwide recognition for his vocal power and range proving himself as a vocal powerhouse within the New Zealand music industry. 2 months later, in July of 2017, DW rose to the forefront of the New Zealand R&B and Hip-Hop scene as he became part of New Zealand Hip-Hop history by becoming the only singer to win the viral #8BallChallenge which swept the nation on social media and went on to become the ‘Elevate (Super Remix)’ by Ice Man. Consisting of a range of both up and coming and already established artists DW gained praise for his international sound that set him apart form the rest and made him the standout performer, putting himself forward as the artist who “got next”. Later in December of 2017 DW released a collaboration EP with Dominick titled ‘The Crossover’ and in early 2018 he released his collaboration smash single with underground phenom artist Swade Wallace called ‘Give It To Me’ which found success across radio stations across New Zealand before eventually changing his name to ‘Darnell Wilson’ in May of 2018 and wrapping up the saga that was ‘Darnell’.
Following his name change in May of 2018 DW released a collaboration single titled ‘Never Meant To Last’ with New Zealand producer Tattooed Mulligan and Dominick which found success on radio stations across New Zealand and on Spotify, then in late 2018 DW maintained momentum as he released the third and fourth instalments of his ‘Cover/Remix’ series releasing his performance of ’To My Bed’, by Chris Brown, and ’Trip’, by Ella Mai, which was assisted by 2015 New Zealand X-Factor winner ‘Beau Monga’.
In February of 2019 DW linked up with now label co-artist ‘Richie Cattell’ and they released their collaboration single ‘Stay On My Body’, with a feature appearance from ‘Beau Monga’, which went on to find major success on Spotify and New Zealand radio which led him to headlining the most successful independent New Zealand tour of 2019 known as the ‘Light It Up New Zealand Tour’. After a successful run across the country the tour ended it’s campaign opening for R&B Superstar Jacquees in Auckland. This is where DW won over his now management and label ‘Rik Starr Entertainment’ with his next level live performance and earned him a huge co-sign from popular promotion & blog company ‘Hit Up Ange’ stating that DW has an “incredible voice” and they “can’t wait to see what the future holds for him.”
Throughout his career DW has had the opportunity to perform alongside major international acts such as G-Eazy & Jhene Aiko (2016), Sean Kingston (2016), Bow Wow (2018) and Jacquees (2019) to name a few. With 2 years elapsing since his last official release DW fans have been preparing to make his return a comeback campaign to remember and with his eyes set on being more then just the future of New Zealand R&B, fans eagerly await to hear what DW has in store as he sets out to put on full display the evolution of ‘Darnell Wilson’.
