The Ian Campbell Folk Group, formed in 1956 in Birmingham, England, was a folk music ensemble led by Ian Campbell. Initially known as the Clarion Skiffle Group, they renamed themselves the Ian Campbell Folk Group in 1958. Their first recordings included the EP Ceilidh at the Crown, released in 1962, marking one of the earliest live folk club recordings on vinyl. The group signed to Transatlantic Records in 1963 and released their debut studio album, This Is the Ian Campbell Folk Group. Throughout the 1960s, they made numerous television appearances, including on shows like Hootenanny and Barn Dance, and performed at prestigious venues such as the Royal Albert Hall and the Royal Festival Hall. In 1964, they played at the Newport Folk Festival, and in 1965, their cover of "The Times They Are a-Changin'" by Bob Dylan reached Number 42 on the UK Singles Chart. The group continued to perform across Britain and Scandinavia into the 1970s, with notable members including Dave Swarbrick and Brian Clark. In 2012, Ian Campbell received the 'Good Tradition' Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards for his contributions to folk music. He passed away later that year on November 24.
