Thomas-René Gerlach, known professionally as DJ Tonka, was born on June 24, 1973, in Mainz, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. He began his career working with fellow producer Ian Pooley in groups such as Outrage, Space Cube, and T'N'I, producing records in techno, progressive house, and breakbeat genres. In 1996, he started his solo career under the name DJ Tonka, focusing on house music with influences from synthpop and American garage house. His early releases included "Security / The Night" (1997) and the maxi-single She Knows You (1998). He achieved notable success as a remixer, reworking tracks such as "Trapped" for Colonel Abrams, "Love Shack" for The B-52's, and "Push It" for Salt-N-Pepa. DJ Tonka founded two record labels: Uplifting Records in 1997 and Vivienne Records in 2000. His notable albums include Peaktime (In One Go) (1998) and 84 (2004). Throughout his career, DJ Tonka collaborated with various artists and continued to produce music, showcasing his versatility and influence in the electronic dance music scene.
