Mandinga is a Romanian pop-Latin group originating from Bucharest, formed in 2002 by a collective of musicians that included members of Cuban origin such as Barbara Isasi, alongside Alex, Chupi, Bazooka, and Florin Zach, bringing a blend of Latin rhythms to the Romanian music scene. The group’s international breakthrough came with the release of “Zaleilah” in September 2011, which went on to secure a twelfth-place finish with 71 points at the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 in Baku, marking their first major exposure beyond Romania. Following Eurovision, the band’s studio output included Gozalo! (2006) and Donde (2008), albums that showcased a fusion of world music elements and pop sensibilities, with tracks that achieved regional recognition in Romania and neighboring countries. In early 2016, vocalist Elena Ionescu departed, and Barbara Isasi assumed the role of frontwoman, prompting a shift toward English- and Spanish-language releases and a smoother pop- and R&B-leaning style. Throughout their career, Mandinga maintained a consistent presence on the Romanian charts, with “Zaleilah” reaching the top ten and subsequent singles sustaining moderate commercial success. The group has performed extensively across Europe at festivals and tours and has been signed to Romanian labels supporting international distribution, with their Latin-pop sound continuing to hold a place within Romania’s contemporary pop landscape.
