Néstor Torres, a Puerto Rican jazz flautist born on April 25, 1957 in Mayaguez, began his musical journey at age 12 with flute lessons and formal studies at the Escuela Libre de Música. At 18, he moved to New York where he continued his education at Mannes College of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music. Torres released his debut album Colombia En Charanga in 1978, marking the beginning of a prolific career. His subsequent albums include Dance of the Phoenix (1990), This Side Of Paradise (2001), which won Best Pop Instrumental Album at the 2nd Annual Latin Grammy Awards, and Nouveau Latino (2009). Torres has also been involved in educational initiatives, joining Florida International University as a visiting guest artist and founding director of its School of Music's first charanga ensemble in 2010.
