Karl Ulrich Schnabel, born on August 6, 1909 in Berlin, was an Austrian pianist. He began studying piano at age five and later trained at the Berlin University of Music under Leonid Kreutzer and Paul Juon from 1922 to 1926. Schnabel's career took off as a professor of piano and international artist. In 1933, he left Berlin due to the rise of the Nazis and briefly settled by Lake Como before emigrating to the United States in 1939. That same year, he married pianist Helen Fogel, with whom he performed extensively for piano four hands. During World War II, Schnabel paused his musical career to work on electronic technology at a laboratory in Massachusetts. Notable recordings include The Tenth Decade - A Celebration (2006), Piano Duo Schnabel (2006), and Johann Sebastian Bach (2008). He passed away on August 27, 2001, in Danbury, Connecticut.
