How does music coming of age sound like? DOTE‘s songs sound like: drumbeats which bubble like lemonade. guitars shy and lurking like drunk lips right before the kiss while nonchalant synthesizers are waiting for the right moment to enter the dance floor.
DOTE are indie coming of age. Lukas, Jonah, Moritz and Niclas, all in their 20s, are all from Essen in Ruhr region. They got to know each other during their time in their school’s choir. Now they're writing pop songs, which are non-pop – hence meaningless might become meaningful. Or vice verca? Maybe, DOTE are the most ambivalent and thus most exciting newcomer indie band within the German scene.
Now DOTE teamed up with Tom Heßler, who is well-known as the singer of the band FOTOS, with his solo project Der Assistent and as a Berlin based producer. During the collaboration three songs – named Thoughts , Mom and “Big Boys” were recorded. They are dealing with hospitals and death, mothers and their sorrows, the fear of older boys which somehow won’t disappear, even though being an adult now. Mac DeMarco-like guitars are making out with New Order inspired synthesizers while Jonah’s dark, vibrating voice mingles with the brighter and softer voice of Lukas. All of this results in a sound free of clichés which makes it hard to put it into a musical corner thus so amazing.
