The natural joy of Brazilian music wears a new face with energy and spicy vibes.
We believe that unpretentious and organic performance (improvised and chaotic at times) brings us closer to the audience; and that freedom, emotion and ecstasy are essential in Brazil’s cultural landscape (as they always were).
Malagueta came to be almost as an autogenesis from different forces of nature that met. These elements are called Pato, Alexis, Nando e Gu. Four musicians that felt an urge to create and offer the beautiful things in their souls to the world. It may seem a trippy and abstract way to describe it, but this is how we feel.
We see our work as a service to other human beings with whom we coexist, illustrating and expressing the marvelous sensations music can cause in our bodies, our minds and our spirits. Be it happiness, melancholy, sensuality, pain or empathy, among many others.
With a peculiar team composed of three Brazilians and one Argentinian, Malagueta started to perform under the name “Power of Peppers”, a tribute band to the Californian Red Hot Chili Peppers, which we all love.
Influenced by the Peppers’ groovy Funk Rock, other musical flavors are added to the main course served by the guys who pay homage to the American band’s spiciness on their own name (“Malagueta” is a type of pepper commonly found in Brazil). Gu leads on the lyrics singing melodies inspired by known Brazilian artists such as Djavan, João Bosco, Mutantes and Charlie Brown Jr;
Pato is an exquisite guitarist, experienced in the music scene of São Paulo and has a gigantic repertoire. His expressiveness harmonizes with his fluid technique, influenced by legends like Pepeu Gomes (Novos Baianos), Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), Randy Rhoads (Ozzy Osborn) and Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple);
Alexis is our hermano who brings his virtuosity and love for the electric bass from Argentina. Besides his clear admiration for Flea from the Peppers, he also gets his lessons from countryman Pedro Aznar and jazz fusion masters Stanley Clarke, Markus Miller and Victor Wooten.
The powerhouse of the band, Nando, shows the tightness every drummer would like to have. Steady and precise, this conductor is heavy-weight, recording and touring with Brazilian comedic heavy metal group Massacration. Nando’s versatility is the result from his worldly known references such as Cuca Teixeira, Deen Castronovo (Journey), Dennis Chambers and Buddy Rich.
