Go March is a new project born out of jam sessions that have resulted in their debut single ‘Rise’, an electronic, Germanic-infused, post-rock screamer that is a sort of Mogwai meets Kraftwerk synthesis yet with all the futuristic propulsions of a new, fresh and hungry band making music not just for 2015 but for beyond. That said, while the group have landed on this irresistible blend of electronics and rock on ‘Rise’ their initial intentions varied somewhat. “My initial ideas for a possible sound were actually based around bands like Boris or Lightning Bolt, but the moments when we just improvised were simply far more interesting“ says Philipp Weies of the group's early evolutionary period.
Whilst the group state that “it’s quite difficult to pinpoint where inspiration actually comes from.” Weies does concede that one particular inspiration holds especially strong for him: “I am vastly inspired by the movies of David Lynch, especially Lost Highway and even more specifically the sequence where a car is driving through the dark and all you see are the median strips passing by. The image has this distinct tunnel vision-feel to it that I am often looking for when making music.” And whilst ‘Rise’ has all the forward momentum and exhilaration of hurtling down a pitch-black highway, it is not singular in its vision. Not only is it expansive within its own confines as a song but this release sees a series of remixes from Psychemagik, Shigeto, Peaking Lights and Dreemswho all add their own indistinguishable imprint on the track, unpacking and expanding it to take it across a range of sounds and tones that weave from ambient dub to club floor filler.
They say of their chosen remixers: “Shigeto has this very playful approach to electronic music. It has a soothing effect somehow, far away from pumping beats and obvious build-ups. Psychemagik are very versatile, they could have come up with a dub track as well as all kinds of club-styles. But no matter what kind of track they make, you can be sure that it sounds huge. Dreems simply struck us as one of the most exciting and adventurous young producers around and we were obviously also big fans of Peaking Lights since their dubby 936 record back in 2011. We were really excited that they immediately responded to our remix request.” The artists themselves were keen to work with the track, “The original is a lush chugging groove that just captured us. A lot of the time we get asked to remix like our Fleetwood Mac edits so this was a welcome change. There's so many cool textures that inspired us” say Psychemagik, whereas Peaking Lights fell in love with the “great kraut trip to it”.
‘Rise’ is all part of a build up towards a full album due later in the year and whilst the single is emblematic of the group’s desire to push forward and break new boundaries, it is not necessarily sonically representative of what we can expect from the band down the line. “‘Rise’ is not how the whole record will sound like. You might see it as kind of an average between some tunes that are quite danceable and others that are more dreamy” the band says.
