The Refugees set about to play the most gritty, impassioned, and authentic music they possibly could, right out of the gate. Featuring musicians that have gained a vast wealth of experience in blues and rock circles, they have managed to do just that. The band initially came about when singer Hector Gomez and session player Chris Walker combined forces and began to write. What were already great acoustic tracks took on another life when they were electrified, and reinforced by the powerhouse drums of Mark Black – another session musician and songwriter.
After the events that saw the (hopefully temporary) decline in live music, The Refugees forged ahead in other areas, and became one of the first bands globally to release new material in difficult circumstances in April 2020. Drawing on their not insubstantial individual accomplishments, they managed to get into the studio to record the music that they are now able to release. Combining rock with other influences ranging from Texan blues masters, Flamenco and jazz, we can come full circle by saying that it’s definitely music which can be described as gritty, impassioned and above all, authentic.
